LCPC
A Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor has advanced training, a graduate academic degree, clinical work experience, and has completed a state-certified licensing examination. Counselors often treat people dealing with problems such as alcoholism, addiction, or eating disorders. Some specialize in marriage, family, or child counseling. With this license, the counselor can work independently and can receive health-care insurance reimbursements.
Counselor/Therapist
Licensed Counselors have a master's or a doctoral degree in counseling or a related area and complete two years of supervised practice. In most states, they are licensed as independent providers of mental health services, including the diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional issues, and use a variety of therapeutic techniques.
MS
A Master of Science is an academic degree usually awarded after completion of two years of graduate study. Many MS programs also require a thesis. Many therapists hold a master's degree, and many earn a master's "en route" to earning their doctoral degree.
NCC
The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) issues the National Certified Counselor (NCC) certification based on the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE). This professional certification requires an advanced degree in counseling, clinical training, and face-to-face counseling, among other course work.
